October brings lots of changes and new experiences…cooler weather, crackling leaves, cozy fires, and Halloween! For Holbert Family Orthodontics, October brings National Orthodontic Health Month and an opportunity to remind patients of some care and safety basics for their orthodontia.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has provided 4 ways to protect braces, aligners and other orthodontic appliances for patients to keep in mind all year round.

Avoid Sticky SnacksTwo little kids holding jack o lanterns in front of their faces, representing national orthodontic health month

This includes hard candy, sticky foods, crunchy/chewy snacks and candy. Bubblegum, taffy, caramel, gummies and jelly beans can all become stuck in appliances and cause damage to orthodontia. Opt for a healthier alternative instead, such as fruit cut into bite-sized pieces, or stick to our recommended desserts that won’t hurt your braces!

Hard Treats are a No No

Crunchy treats, such as tortilla chips, nuts and popcorn are all foods that can cause traditional braces to break.  Breaking the brackets or wires on braces causes damage to the appliances and requires an appointment to repair.

Make Sure to Brush

All the extra sweet stuff can cause cavities, so make sure to brush and floss regularly. When wearing orthodontia, patients need to be especially careful about brushing and flossing after every meal and after having a sweet treat. Braces wearers can ask their orthodontists about the right tools for caring for and cleaning their appliances.

Find an Alternative to the Sticky Stuff

Not all treats are off limits to orthodontic patients. Soft chocolates, peanut butter cups and candies that don’t contain nuts are a good alternative for a sweet treat. Just make sure to follow the guidelines given by the orthodontist.

If all else fails, consider participating in a candy buy back program at your local orthodontist’s office. Many providers participate in candy buy back programs in order to provide their patients with a fun, healthy alternative to the sugary treats that abound during the season.

National Orthodontic Health Month

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, a time to spotlight the significance of orthodontic care and its impact on long-term oral health. This month encourages patients to understand how treatments like braces and aligners do more than just improve the appearance of their smile—they also play a key role in preventing future dental issues.

Properly aligned teeth reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and even jaw complications by promoting better oral hygiene and bite function. National Orthodontic Health Month also serves as a reminder to maintain healthy habits, such as avoiding sticky, sugary snacks that can damage braces or interfere with treatment. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate healthy, beautiful smiles and raise awareness about the lifelong benefits of orthodontic care.

National Orthodontic Health Month also offers an opportunity to highlight the latest advancements in orthodontic treatment. With innovations like clear aligners, self-ligating braces, and accelerated treatment options, there are more choices than ever before to achieve a straighter, healthier smile. These modern approaches make orthodontic care more comfortable, efficient, and less noticeable, allowing patients of all ages to enjoy the benefits of treatment without the traditional inconveniences. This month, take the time to explore the options available and consult with your orthodontist to find the best fit for your needs.

In addition to celebrating the benefits of orthodontic care, this month is also a reminder of the importance of early intervention. Orthodontic evaluations during childhood can help identify and address issues before they become more complex. Early treatment can guide proper jaw development, prevent overcrowding, and correct bite issues, setting the stage for a healthier smile as children grow. National Orthodontic Health Month underscores the value of regular check-ups, ensuring that both kids and adults are on the path to optimal oral health.
